Asian Hate

Recently, not only has the virus been spread, but there has also been the spread of hate and xenophobia as well. As an Asian American, I am no stranger to the casual racist remarks that are quickly brushed off as jokes. These same racist remarks are constantly used in the media, music, and etc, but are always overlooked. The voices of angry Asian Americans have constantly been invalidated, and their feelings have been deemed unimportant. Stereotypes of Asian Americans being good at math, good at academics, and the model minority myth aren't positive. They force pressure onto young Asian Americans and undermine the real handwork they probably had to go through. The corona virus has allowed for an increase in the singling out of Asian Americans, and the fact that our own President called the virus the "Chinese virus" doesn't help, but instead encourages more racism towards the group of people.

Click here to read about an 89-year-old Asian woman who was set on fire in Brooklyn. The case was not deemed as a hate crime and many urged for it to be further investigated as one. This incident incited protests and more from the Asian American community, which you can read more about here. These protests and people are demonstrating speaking out against the injustice they and others have faced. It is important to apply what we preach online onto our everyday lives by calling it out and taking action when we see it.
